500 miles !

Somewhere along Victoria Embankment today I passed the half way mark in the 1000 miles part of my Marathon Challenge.

In 2011 I've set myself the target of:

- running a total of 1000 miles;
- completing the Brighton Marathon;
- completing the BUPA London 10000;
- completing the New Forest Half Marathon;
- completing the Royal Parks Half Marathon

I'm doing this to raise money for two charities:

- Practical Action, which works with communities in developing countries to implement simple, sustainable technology to improve their lives;

- CLIC Sargent, the UK's leading children's cancer charity, which cares for children and young people with cancer and their families;

I don't intend to fail my challenge :-) but if I do, I'll donate £1 for every mile I'm short of 1000 by the end of the year.

I'll be using this blog to keep track of my progress with my runs and with my fundraising.

The challenge rules

The self-imposed "rules" of my 1000 mile challenge are pretty simple:

1. I log all of the runs I do (either in training or during races) on a spreadsheet;

2. Any continuous run I do, outdoors, which exceeds 1 mile in distance, counts towards my total;

3. Distance is calculated either from my Garmin Forerunner or, if I'm not wearing it, from plotting the route on WalkJogRun.

4. "continuous" means running without stopping - except for safety reasons, for example when crossing roads or at traffic lights etc.

5. If I fail to reach my target for the year, I pay £1 to the charity(ies) for every mile I've fallen short.
